Said the game was meaningless and said he pitched a kid that had only threw 4 innings in his career. Claimed if the game meant something he would've coached it differently.

Just another attempt to down play a loss to Wise. This man never ceases to amaze me. What kind of coach deems a game meaningless at this point in the season? Momentum is key, just ask Gate City. They are riding it into the post season with HUGE wins over VA High and Battle. The Honaker/Burton game will be a good one on Tuesday, but I am very much looking forward to the semi-final matchups!

Were the other 2 games against the Tribe meaningless? The Raiders dropped them both as well. The game was equally "meaningless" to the Indians who had everything wrapped up,yet still came to win the trophy. There's the difference between the 2 right there.

The difference is that Wise has a better team and really only plays for baseball. Has forever and always will be the main sport at JJ Kelly. Norton really, even with Shupe could care less about baseball. Kids concentrate on football and to a lesser extent basketball.

Guess Shupe should have thought about before he opened his mouth and guaranteed a state title within 3 years. 6 years now and counting. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif[/img]

I also will add that the statement that folks generally make when they say JJK is a baseball-only school is inaccurate. Out of 22 state titles,8 come via the diamond. JJK's lady netters arguably matched the baseball dynasty with their wonderful run back when. Football,golf,basketball,and wrestling have also seen the TRIBE hoist state gold. Not many schools can say that they have won titles in 6 sports. To say that Wise is all-baseball is a discredit to the very successfull athletes that have walked its halls.

Agreed. Neither JJ Kelly or Shupe has prospered since his departure as they did when the two were together.

JJK still hasn't done too bad since he left though. They have been to the final four what, 4 of the 6 years since he left? Thats about as good clip as it was with Shupe there. The whole game being meaningless wasn't even the comment I was referring to. It was this:

"They've got transfer students coming in left and right. In this district, you don't know who you're going to be playing against," said Shupe.

"They've got two kids out here today that played for Pound last year. Last year they had a kid playing third base that played for Clintwood the year before."

Thats a pretty crappy statement from a guy who has had his fair share of transfers. The last state title he won, probably wouldn't have been won if it wasn't for transfers. His first year at JIB he had the Key kid transfer in from Coeburn. Its like the pot calling the kettle black.

And so know one can say I didn't put Wyrick's quote on here, here ya go.

"Coach Shupe needs to worry about his own team Tuesday and I'll coach my team," said Wyrick. "It's not like he never had any transfers. He needs to worry about coaching his team and getting them ready."

I didn't see that one in the paper, just skimmed it. Do you have a link to that? FWIW, if Pound could keep all of their players they would be a force. haha
